I grew up in a small town in Central New York State. One would think I would have grown up either a fan of the Giants, Jets, or Bills. Well, honestly I couldn't stand those 3 teams at all. I followed the Washington Redskins. The first Superbowl I remember watching was Superbowl XVII with the Washington Redskins defeating the Miami Dolphins. I watched in awe as the 'Skins dismantled Miami to take their first ever NFL Championship. From that point I was hooked. I also followed the San Francisco 49ers in the 80's and 90's. Joe Montana (later Steve Young) and Jerry Rice were unstoppable... I loved the way they worked together to beat their opponents each week.
I moved to Houston, TX in 1995. I was glad to finally be in a city that hosted an NFL team, even though it had been decided by the time I got there the team would be moving to Tennessee. I got to attend my first NFL game in October 1996 when the 49ers came to play the Houston Oilers at the Astrodome. I had a great time at the game, which was made even better since the 49ers won that day.
Well, for the next 6 seasons Houston did not have its own NFL franchise. All that changed in 2000 when it was announced that Bob McNair had been awarded the 32nd NFL franchise (after the NFL gave Los Angeles ever opportunity it could afford to beat Houston) to be named the Houston Texans. The first game played in the new stadium was against that team just north of Houston named the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans won the day 19-10.
For the first few years I really couldn't follow the Texans as closely as I would have liked. I worked most Sundays at the time. For me it was hard to follow when I rarely got the chance to even watch. I did pay attention to how they played. All that changed again in 2007 when I got to attend the Week 1 match up against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Texans won the day 20-3. From there on out I followed the Texans, and the NFL in general, very closely.
Here we are in 2o1o, just 1 season removed from our first ever winning season and on the cusp of making the playoffs. The Texans were on the bubble last year, and came within 1 game of making the playoffs. They needed 1 of 2 other teams on the bubble to lose - unfortunately they both won (and not in convincing fashion, I might add). This year is full of promise if the team can recapture the momentum from last year. If they can do better than 1-5 in the AFC South (8-2 against the rest of the NFL), they will definitely be a tough team to beat.
The blog will work like this - I will be making predictions each week on all the games being played, along with some comments sprinkled in here and there. This will, however, be a Texans-centered blog. I will report news as I get it and give any thoughts I may have on a particular topic as it relates to the team. Feel free to make any comments you may have concerning the games played or about the Texans. All I ask is to keep the language clean and no personal attacks on others who may have differing opinions on something. I hope everyone will enjoy the season as much as I plan to.
GO TEXANS!!
